内容大纲
本书第一版于1853年由伦敦布道会出版，共248页；上海长老会于1868年再版，共225页。作者以其杰出的才能和语言学理论修养，对19世纪中叶开埠初10年时上海县城方言的语音、词语、语法做了最早的忠实记录和全方位研究，有不少精辟的论述和独到领先的见解。尽管它是一本语法书，然其语音、语法并重，并提供了当时丰富的语言、社会和文化背景知识。在描写和论述的基础上，艾氏还将上海话同官话、中国东南部方言尤其是上海周边地区的方言进行了一些共时性的比较。
全书共有三章，第一章语音，第二章词类，第三章句法，从1至429节段连贯叙述，有两个附录，其中第二个附录谈到了吴语周边地区的语音语法相关现象。
作者对19世纪中叶开埠不久的上海的方言语音状况进行了准确全面的描写和分析。此书既用西方辅音、元音系统的分析方法记录了上海方言语音，又用汉语传统方法对上海话的韵母和声调进行了梳理归纳。
