内容大纲
本书为住房和城乡建设部“十四五”规划教材。在第一版基础上，作者更新了部分单元内容，引入了我国最新的土木工程案例，如中国绿色建筑、中国港珠澳大桥、“一带一路”中巴经济走廊等，旨在提高学生的民族自豪感和爱国热情，激发学生科技报国的家国情怀和使命担当，契合“课程思政”的教育理念。
基于“兴趣是最好的老师”的理念，全书共包括12个教学单元：绪论、做你自己的工程师、关于港珠澳大桥的N件事、绿色建筑、齐心开创共建“一带一路”美好未来、悉尼歌剧院、世贸大厦为什么倒塌？饭店人行天桥倒塌、新加坡酒店倒塌、国王十字车站大火、拉伸实验、为成为土木工程师做准备。每个单元都包括重难点单词、课堂讨论、自我展示、翻译练习、写作训练等活动，全面提高学生的“听、说、读、写”综合能力。本书还附有二维码，生动展示学生优秀作业、优秀演讲等。
所选材料生动有趣，内容涵盖建筑设计的奇思妙想、结构设计的传承与创新、设计缺陷引发灾难、设计变更引发灾难、灾难生还者访谈、专家灾难调查和灾后重建、绿色建筑及可持续发展等内容的交叉融合创新。使学生通过工程典范和重返危机现场的视听学以及土木相关英文报道学习等，深刻理解土木工程师在公众健康、公共安全、社会文化、法律法规、生态环境等方面应承担的责任和义务。
本教材可作为高等学校本科生以及研究生专业英语课程教材，教师可以根据学生的具体情况对课时适当调整，有选择地使用本教材内容。本教材也可供从事土木工程设计、施工、管理以及研究的专业人员参考使用。
